Senator Debbie Stabenow was elected co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force. She will share leadership with Republican Senator Mark Kirk. The organization works to protect the environmental integrity and is made up of members of Congress who represent states bordering the Great Lakes.

Both senators have a distinguished record of working to protect the Great Lakes. Debbie Stabenow introduced legislation that banned oil drilling, the first bill that passed from her office. She also introduced legislation to help in the fight against invasive species. Mark Kirk has fought against dumping sewage and cleaning up contamination points on the Illinois border of Lake Michigan.

The Great Lakes Task Force will continue to work to restore and preserve the Great Lakes with both senators collaborating together. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative will be a priority for the task force. This legislation contains many programs and continue in maintaining this important and precious natural resource.

Congratulations, Senator Stabenow.
